This procedure has been used in the surgical world before and has now been rediscovered again, living a true renaissance these days.
Today the technique of extraction, purification, homogenization and treatment has improved considerably, influenced by our American colleague, Dr. Coleman, who continuously examined and improved his own methods of treatment.
What is fat grafting used for ?
In the medical world, the fat-grafting or fat-injection procedure is known as autologous fat transplantation or microlipoinjection. Fat grafting is used to correct skin damages caused by improperly performed liposuction, to fill in “sunken cheeks”, “hollow eyes”, facial scars or mild wrinkles, laugh lines between nose and mouth, to augment lips or other body regions.
The advantages are obvious:
- own fat does not get rejected, therefore no possibility of allergic reaction
- enough deposits to be used for several treatments
- long lasting results
The fat used is withdrawn with a special cannula from another area of the body, usually from the abdomen or thighs. It is then purified, spun in a centrifuge and homogenized and is then injected with even more delicate instruments into the areas to be treated.
This method is more time consuming than when using other injectable fillers, but the results are rewarding and long lasting.
The treatment is performed under local anesthetic combined with sedation (analogue sedation) and may be performed in conjunction with a face lift or other facial treatments.
